While the Meru Nest Experience focuses on local walks and everyday life around the Nest, many guests also wish to explore the landscapes and culture of northern Tanzania.
Through our trusted local partners we can help organise a selection of day trips and outdoor experiences in the region.
These excursions are not part of the Meru Nest Experience and should ideally be arranged before arrival.
These excursions explore the landscapes and communities surrounding Arusha and usually take most of the day.
Located just 15 minutes from Meru Nest, Lake Duluti is a peaceful volcanic crater lake surrounded by forest.
Visitors can enjoy a scenic walk around the lake and reach two beautiful viewpoints, offering views towards Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.
The lake is also a wonderful place for canoeing, providing excellent opportunities for birdwatching and photography, especially from the quiet perspective of the water.
Bird species often seen around the lake include kingfishers, African fish eagles, herons and many forest birds.
Early morning and late afternoon canoe trips are particularly special, with the chance to experience sunrise or sunset on the lake while surrounded by forest and birdlife.
A visit to a Maasai community in the Monduli area offers insight into traditional pastoralist life and everyday rural life west of Arusha.
Guests may learn about Maasai culture and daily routines, join a short medicinal plant walk with local guides, and experience traditional nyama choma — freshly grilled meat prepared over an open fire, a popular East African dish often shared during gatherings.
During the visit it is also possible to observe aspects of daily life in the community, including people fetching water and the use of donkeys to transport water and goods across the landscape, an important part of everyday life in rural Maasai areas.
This excursion provides a genuine glimpse into local life beyond the city.
Depending on the day of the week, it is possible to visit a traditional Maasai livestock and trading market in the Monduli region.
These lively markets are rarely visited by tourists and provide a fascinating glimpse into everyday local trade and community life.
These excursions explore the wider landscapes of northern Tanzania and usually take a full day.
Arusha National Park is the closest national park to the city and offers a remarkable variety of landscapes within a relatively small area.
The park includes lush montane forest, open grasslands, volcanic craters and the beautiful Momella Lakes, with impressive views of Mount Meru.
Possible activities include:
Game drives through forest and open plains
Walking safaris with an armed ranger (approximately 2 or 4 hours)
Canoeing on the Momella Lakes among water birds
A visit to the scenic Tululusia Waterfall
Wildlife in the park may include giraffes, buffalo, zebras, warthogs, colobus monkeys and many bird species.
Arusha National Park is ideal for guests who would like to experience wildlife and beautiful landscapes without traveling far from Arusha.
Mount Meru rises above Arusha and is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain.
Possible experiences include:
Multi-day Mount Meru climbs
Guided hikes on the lower slopes
Forest walks in the foothills of the mountain
All excursions are organised through our trusted local partners.
